Web3 gaming is more than just owning digital assets—it’s about integrating blockchain technology to create new opportunities for ownership, persistence, and interoperability that traditional games cannot offer.

In conventional gaming, players invest time and money into acquiring in-game items, but those assets remain locked within centralized ecosystems. Web3 changes this by enabling true asset ownership, allowing items to exist independently of any single game or company. Additionally, onchain records provide transparency and permanence, ensuring progression and achievements remain secure and accessible, regardless of changes to game servers or corporate decisions.

Not every game needs full blockchain integration, and the right approach depends on the experience the game developers want to build. Broadly, Web3 gaming falls into three categories of Web3 depth:

  1. Minimal onchain interaction: Games that use a blockchain just for asset ownership, where NFTs exist but in-game actions largely occur separately.
  2. Dynamic NFTs and onchain data updates: Games where NFTs evolve and game progress is stored, allowing key player actions to be recorded onchain.
  3. Fully onchain gaming: Games where all interactions occur onchain, fully utilizing blockchain technology.

Each category offers distinct advantages and trade-offs. Understanding these levels helps game designers strike the right balance between blockchain’s strengths—such as transparency, ownership, and persistence—development cost, and user experience while pushing gaming forward.

Minimal onchain interaction

Some games use blockchain only as a verification layer for digital ownership. In this model, items like character skins, weapons, or collectibles exist as NFTs onchain, but gameplay and progression remain entirely offchain. Players can trade or sell their NFTs, but their in-game actions may not be recorded onchain.

This approach is cost-effective and scalable, allowing games to retain traditional development simplicity while giving players greater asset ownership. However, most blockchains store NFTs within smart contracts, meaning ownership is dictated by contract logic. Sui’s object-oriented model changes this by making NFTs independent onchain objects, fully owned by the player. This ensures direct control over assets, enabling more flexible interactions like trading, customization, and in-game utility.

Stateful integration with Dynamic NFTs

Moving beyond static NFTs, games can actively update onchain data to reflect player progression. In this model, NFTs evolve based on in-game achievements, battle results, or time spent playing. Weapons might gain attributes, characters might level up, and leaderboards are recorded immutably.

This middle ground balances blockchain’s advantages with practical game design. By maintaining game logic offchain but syncing key updates onchain, developers can provide provable progression and persistent identity while integrating with rich game engines such as Unreal or Unity.

Sui’s dynamic fields take this concept further by allowing NFTs to update fluidly without complex smart contract modifications. Developers can design NFTs that change based on in-game conditions. For example, a character’s appearance could shift when entering a new level, or their stats could adjust when an item is equipped. These real-time, conditional updates give game assets more depth and adaptability, making NFTs in Sui-based games far more powerful than static digital collectibles.

Fully onchain gaming

At the deepest level of Web3 integration, some games run entirely onchain, where every move, action, and response is recorded immutably. This enables true asset ownership, persistent in-game history, and fully onchain game logic without reliance on centralized servers.

While the vision of fully onchain gaming is compelling, it has historically faced scalability challenges. Traditional blockchains struggle with real-time, high-frequency transactions, making this approach impractical for complex, feature-rich games with deep mechanics and expansive worlds.

However, Sui’s parallel execution model, object-centric architecture, and advanced consensus mechanism, Mysticeti, remove many of these constraints, enabling high-performance, real-time blockchain interactions, with transactions completed in less than half a second. As blockchain infrastructure evolves, fully onchain games will be able to create richer, more immersive experiences than conventional games. With Sui’s efficiency and scalability, developers can push the boundaries of what’s possible in Web3 gaming.

Sui powers the next generation of Web3 games

Blockchain's origins as a secure transaction platform make adapting it as an environment that supports games challenging, to say the least, but Sui was developed as an advanced network compute environment, wholly capable of hosting advanced applications. Sui’s core primitives simplify the process of game development, making advanced onchain features more accessible. Tools like zkLogin, Sponsored Transactions, Programmable Transaction Blocks (PTBs), and Sui Kiosk remove friction, allowing games to integrate blockchain in ways that enhance, rather than disrupt, the player experience.

By combining these primitives, Sui empowers developers to integrate blockchain seamlessly without adding unnecessary complexity for players. These tools streamline onboarding, remove gas fee friction, simplify multi-step transactions, and enable trustless asset trading—all while ensuring players maintain full control over their in-game items. Together, they unlock possibilities far beyond what any single feature could achieve, creating a more fluid, engaging Web3 gaming experience.

For example, a game could use zkLogin to onboard players instantly with a Twitch or Google account, sponsored transactions to remove gas fees from the user experience, and programmable transaction blocks (PTBs) to allow seamless multi-step actions—completing a quest, receiving a reward, and unlocking access to new content—all in a single transaction. Meanwhile, Sui Kiosk ensures that players retain control of their assets even when putting them up for trade, reinforcing true ownership right up to the point of transfer. The interplay of these features doesn’t just make blockchain gaming easier, it enables entirely new gameplay mechanics, economies, and engagement models that wouldn’t be possible on other blockchains.

Unlocking greater potential for Web3 games

Web3 gaming is evolving, with developers exploring deeper blockchain integration beyond simple NFT uses. As scalability improves and more powerful tools and primitives become available, blockchain-powered mechanics will enhance traditional game design.

The future isn’t about putting everything onchain, it’s about strategic integration where blockchain adds value. Whether through light-touch asset ownership or fully onchain worlds, Sui provides the tools for developers to push boundaries and create richer, more immersive gaming experiences. The next wave of Web3 gaming will be defined not by limitations, but by how far developers are willing to go.
