Main Takeaways:

  • A recently announced member of the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT), Sui is an early contributor and sponsor of the Open Tokenized Asset Standard (OTAS), an open-source framework initiated by OpenAssets.
  • Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust provides the neutral, open-source governance for OTAS, a shared set of standards necessary to grow this critical new asset class.
  • The new standards will make it easier for tokenized assets to move across institutions and financial systems, helping unlock more connected markets for securities, funds, commodities, and more use cases.

Small marketplaces historically become larger and more useful when participants begin operating by common rules: a shared language, agreed expectations, and ways to verify goods and claims. Few know this benefit better than the Linux Foundation, which has helped develop trusted, neutral governance across technologies like Linux, Kubernetes, and PyTorch for more than two decades.

Tokenized assets are now reaching a similar inflection point. Institutions are increasingly issuing digital versions of securities, funds, commodities, and other assets with projections of tokenized assets reaching $30 trillion by 2034. One issue remains, however: those assets often remain locked inside separate systems, and connecting them requires time-consuming and costly custom work that makes it harder for institutions to transact with one another.

To break down these silos, Sui is collaborating with OpenAssets, a digital financial infrastructure company focused on real-world tokenization, to help define Open Tokenized Asset Standard (OTAS), a new standard hosted under Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust (LFDT) that is expressly designed to solve the frictions inherent to isolated systems. In addition to helping lead the development of OTAS as an open standard, Sui and OpenAssets are extending OTAS to the Sui ecosystem.

Governed as an LFDT lab, OTAS establishes a neutral, open-source framework for representing, verifying, and settling tokenized assets across financial systems. Sui Foundation is one of the original sponsors of OTAS and has been involved in shaping the standard from the start.

“The process of issuing tokenized assets is only the first step into a much broader ecosystem. For digital capital markets to grow efficiently, institutions and financial platforms need a common framework for identity, ownership, compliance, and settlement across different systems,” said Adeniyi Abiodun, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer at Mysten Labs, the original contributor to Sui. “OTAS provides that shared language without forcing institutions onto a single blockchain or technology stack. Open standards like this can connect what are today fragmented markets and help unlock the scale and breadth of opportunity that tokenized finance has long promised.”

Solving for Institutional Fragmentation with a Common Language

Instead of forcing market participants onto a single blockchain or forcing them to rewrite their legacy architecture, OTAS standardizes how an asset presents identity, compliance rules, and audit history.

This neutrality creates a trusted foundation where stakeholders can collaborate on standards that serve the industry as a whole. It also allows institutions to retain their preferred tech stacks while seamlessly trading, verifying, and moving assets across networks. While OTAS is chain-agnostic, Sui’s object-centric Move architecture, high throughput, and instant finality make it an optimal execution venue for complex, compliance-heavy capital markets.

“Financial markets have always depended on trusted standards," said Daniela Barbosa, General Manager, Decentralized Technologies, Linux Foundation, and Executive Director, LF Decentralized Trust, "OTAS applies that principle to tokenized assets by creating an open framework that the broader industry can shape together. Sui and OpenAssets are key collaborators helping shape the neutral governance of this LFDT lab as a model for the next generation of digital capital markets.”

Sui’s role in adopting the OTAS builds on recent news from Hadron by Tether, which recently announced it had added Sui to its tokenization platform, giving institutions access to seamlessly and compliantly tokenize on the Sui network.

"Extending OTAS to Sui makes compliance and ownership history portable, giving institutions a consistent, trusted view of an asset across networks," said Gabor Gurbacs, Chairman and CEO of OpenAssets. "We welcome Sui’s contribution to OTAS and the broader effort to build open, interoperable standards for tokenized assets."

Built for AI Agents and Automated Settlement

The same foundation can support a new generation of financial software. As financial software evolves, autonomous AI agents will increasingly handle tasks like collateral rebalancing, trade execution, and automated settlement. These agents require machine-readable rules to evaluate asset risk and ownership. OTAS provides this uniform layer, enabling automated systems to interact across platforms without requiring custom integrations for every new asset class.

The Open Tokenized Asset Standard is actively being developed as an open-source Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust lab. Financial institutions, infrastructure providers, developers, and other market participants are invited to contribute to the ongoing development of the standard and its reference implementations.

FAQ

  • What is Sui’s role in this framework?
    • Sui has been involved in the broader conversations with Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust since the beginning, and is now a member. With OTAS available on Sui, assets issued in the Sui ecosystem follow the same open rules as assets on other networks, so their history and status can be trusted wherever they move.
  • Why is Sui so ideally suited in this situation?
    • While OTAS is chain-agnostic, Sui’s object-centric Move architecture, high throughput, and instant finality make it an optimal execution venue for complex, compliance-heavy capital markets.
  • How does OpenAssets fit within this partnership?
    • OpenAssets is the founding contributor to OTAS. The lab operates under LF Decentralized Trust, where all outputs remain openly governed and community-owned. OpenAssets builds infrastructure and open standards for digital financial systems. It has previously partnered with Sui, and both continue to push for clear standards in this emerging and critical market.
